TSP for Minnesota Military Members

The Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) is the military equivalent of a 401(k). Under the Blended Retirement System (BRS), DoD automatically contributes 1% of your basic pay and matches up to an additional 4% — totaling up to 5% free money if you contribute 5%.

TSP Investment Funds

• G Fund: Government securities, lowest risk, ~2-3% returns
• F Fund: Fixed income bonds, ~3-4% average
• C Fund: S&P 500 index, historically ~10% average
• S Fund: Small/mid-cap stocks, higher risk/reward
• I Fund: International stocks

TSP Tax Advantages

Traditional TSP: Contributions are pre-tax, reducing your taxable income now. You pay taxes in retirement. Good if you expect lower taxes in retirement.

Roth TSP: Contributions are post-tax. Withdrawals in retirement are tax-free. Especially valuable for junior enlisted who are in low tax brackets now.
