VA Disability Benefits in Georgia

VA disability compensation is tax-free income paid monthly to veterans with service-connected disabilities. The VA uses a "whole person" formula โ€” not simple addition โ€” which confuses many veterans and often results in lower ratings than expected.

How VA Math Works

The VA uses the "whole person" method. Starting from 100% able-bodied, each rating reduces your remaining percentage:

Example: 50% + 30% = not 80%. Instead: 50% of 100 = 50%, then 30% of remaining 50 = 15%. Combined = 65%, rounded to 70%.

TDIU โ€” Total Disability Individual Unemployability

If you're rated 70% or higher and cannot maintain substantially gainful employment due to your service-connected disabilities, you may qualify for TDIU โ€” which pays at the 100% rate ($3,737+/month) even if your combined rating is below 100%.

Many Georgia veterans are eligible for TDIU but don't know it. Use the calculator to check your eligibility.

VA Disability FAQ โ€” Georgia

Is VA disability pay taxable in Georgia?

No. VA disability compensation is completely tax-free at both the federal level and in Georgia. You will not pay income tax on VA disability payments regardless of the amount.

Can I receive both military retirement and VA disability?

Yes โ€” under CRDP (Concurrent Retirement and Disability Pay) or CRSC (Combat-Related Special Compensation), many veterans can receive both. This is a key financial planning area for Georgia retirees.
