⚠ Coast Guard shutdown pay — the difference that matters

The Coast Guard is the only military branch funded through DHS, not DoD. When DHS appropriations lapse (a partial government shutdown), Coast Guard members can face delayed or withheld pay — even while on duty. This is unlike the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Space Force, which are funded under the DoD budget and historically continue receiving pay during most shutdown scenarios.

During the February 2026 DHS funding lapse, active duty Coast Guard members faced potential missed paychecks. DHS used available discretionary funds to maintain pay temporarily, but the situation was not fully resolved until Congress acted. Coast Guard civilian employees were not paid during that period.

What to watch: DHS CR (continuing resolution) deadlines. When Congress fails to pass a DHS appropriations bill, Coast Guard pay is at risk. Monitor ALCOAST messages and your myPay account during any federal budget standoff. CGMA (Coast Guard Mutual Assistance) provides emergency interest-free loans and grants during pay lapses.

CGMA Contact: mycgma.org — available to active duty, reserve, retired members, and Coast Guard civilian employees. During the 2026 lapse, CGMA responded to over 700 assistance requests totaling more than $1.7 million.

Coast Guard Base Pay 2026 — Same DoD Tables

Coast Guard members use the same basic pay tables as all other U.S. military branches. The 2026 3.8% pay raise applies to every rank from E-1 (Seaman Recruit) to O-10 (Admiral). Pay is determined by pay grade and years of service, identical to Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Space Force.

Coast Guard BAH and BAS 2026

Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH): Coast Guard members receive the same DoD BAH as all other branches. Rates are set by duty station zip code, pay grade, and dependency status. Coast Guard stations span coastal cities from Juneau to Miami to Honolulu — many in high-cost housing markets. BAH is 100% tax-free.

Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS): Enlisted: $476.99/month. Officer: $329.02/month (2026 rates). Tax-free. Does not vary by location.

OHA (Overseas Housing Allowance): For members stationed outside the continental U.S., including overseas cutters and international ports, OHA replaces BAH and is calculated separately by country and grade.

Coast Guard Special Duty Pay (SDP) and Assignment Pay (AP)

The Coast Guard annually updates its Special Duty Pay (SDP) and Assignment Pay (AP) lists via ALCOAST messages. These are over-and-above pays designed to incentivize members to serve in critical billets or hardship assignments.

  • Special Duty Pay (SDP): Compensates for career fields of special importance to the service such as marine safety, port security, aviation, and cyber. Rates vary by billet and grade.
  • Assignment Pay (AP): Tied to specific hard-to-fill assignments. The FY2026 ALCOAST update reflected a budget reduction from prior years, requiring prioritization of the most critical billets.
  • Aviation Career Incentive Pay (ACIP): Coast Guard aviators are eligible for the same ACIP as other DoD services — up to $850/month depending on years of aviation service.
  • Diving Duty Pay: Qualified divers receive $150–$340/month depending on certification level.
  • Sea Pay / Career Sea Pay: Members assigned to cutters and sea billets earn Career Sea Pay (CSP) based on grade and cumulative sea duty. CSP Premium applies after 36 consecutive months at sea.
  • Hazardous Duty Incentive Pay (HDIP): For members performing parachute, demolition, or other designated hazardous duties.

Coast Guard Reserve Pay (Drill Pay)

Coast Guard Selected Reserve (SELRES) members are paid on the same drill pay scale as all other reserve components. One drill = 1/30th of monthly base pay. A standard drill weekend (4 drills) and annual two-week active duty training (AT) make up the baseline compensation. Reserve members use the same myPay system through DFAS.

  • SELRES members retain BAH entitlement during AT periods if they otherwise qualify.
  • Reserve members activated under Title 10 or Title 14 orders receive full active duty pay.
  • Coast Guard Auxiliary (Auxiliarists) are unpaid volunteers and do not receive military pay or benefits, though they may be reimbursed for certain expenses.

Coast Guard Retirement Pay

Coast Guard members are covered under the same military retirement systems as other branches: Legacy High-3 (for those who entered before Jan 1, 2018) or the Blended Retirement System (BRS) for those who entered on or after Jan 1, 2018. BRS includes a 20-year pension at a reduced multiplier (2.0% per year instead of 2.5%) plus TSP government matching up to 5%.

Coast Guard retirees are entitled to TRICARE healthcare coverage, access to commissaries/exchanges, and VA benefits if they meet service requirements for VA-rated disabilities.

Other Unique Coast Guard Pay Situations

  • Coast Guard during wartime: Under 10 USC 3061, the Coast Guard operates as a service of the Armed Forces. During declared wars or when ordered by the President, the Coast Guard may operate as a Navy service — with DoD funding implications for pay continuity.
  • Icebreaker/Polar duty: Members assigned to USCGC Healy or polar operations may qualify for hardship duty pay or sea pay premium for extreme-environment service.
  • Drug interdiction deployments: Members deployed to counter-narcotics operations in the Eastern Pacific or Caribbean may receive hostile fire pay / imminent danger pay ($225/month) when operating in qualifying areas.
  • International missions: Coast Guard personnel embedded with partner nation forces, deployed to CENTCOM regions (e.g., Bahrain, Oman), or operating in foreign waters may receive COLA, OHA, or hardship duty pay.
  • Hurricane and disaster response: Coast Guard members mobilized under emergency orders are entitled to all active duty entitlements. SELRES members recalled to Title 14 orders receive full active duty pay and benefits.
  • Government shutdown / DHS lapse (see above): The most financially impactful unique situation for Coast Guard members. Back pay is always eventually authorized by Congress, but timing is uncertain. Maintain 3–6 months emergency savings and register with CGMA proactively.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Coast Guard use the same pay tables as other military branches?

Yes. Active duty Coast Guard members are paid on the same DoD basic pay tables as Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Space Force. The 2026 3.8% pay raise applies equally to all Coast Guard ranks.

Does the Coast Guard get paid during a government shutdown?

Not automatically. Unlike other DoD branches, Coast Guard is funded under DHS. When DHS appropriations lapse, Coast Guard pay is at risk. Congress has always ultimately authorized back pay, but timing varies. CGMA provides emergency assistance during lapses.

What is CGMA?

Coast Guard Mutual Assistance — the Coast Guard's nonprofit relief society. Provides interest-free loans and grants to members and their families during financial hardship, including government shutdowns. Website: mycgma.org.

What is Coast Guard sea pay?

Career Sea Pay (CSP) is paid monthly to members serving in sea duty billets aboard cutters. Rates range from roughly $50 to $700+ per month depending on grade and cumulative sea time. A CSP Premium of $100/month applies after 36 consecutive months at sea.

Do Coast Guard members get TRICARE?

Yes. Active duty Coast Guard members and their eligible family members are covered under TRICARE. Retirees with 20+ years are eligible for TRICARE retired coverage.
