Air Force Pay Overview

The United States Air Force has roughly 325,000 active-duty Airmen plus the Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard. Base pay uses the same DoD basic pay tables as every other branch — what makes Air Force compensation distinct is its layered system of aviation incentive pays, retention bonuses tied to airframe and AFSC shortages, and special duty assignment pays for instructors, recruiters, and special warfare operators.

The 2026 pay raise of 3.8% applies to all ranks. An Airman's actual paycheck depends on duty location (BAH), career field (bonuses, flight pay), and assignment (combat zone, hardship, special duty).

Air Force / Space Force note: The Space Force was established as a separate service branch in December 2019, carved out of Air Force Space Command. Many shared HR, pay, and personnel systems still run through the Air Force. If you're researching Guardian compensation, see our Space Force pay guide.

Air Force Flight Pay — ACIP and CEFIP

Flight pay is the signature Air Force special pay. It comes in two flavors: one for rated officers, one for career enlisted aircrew.

Aviation Career Incentive Pay (ACIP) — Rated Officers

Pilots, Combat Systems Officers (CSOs), and Air Battle Managers receive ACIP based on years of aviation service. Rates climb with experience and require maintaining gate months (operational flying time) to keep eligibility.

Years of Aviation ServiceMonthly ACIP
2 or less$125
Over 2$156
Over 3$188
Over 4$206
Over 6$650
Over 14$840
Over 22$585
Over 24$495

Career Enlisted Flyer Incentive Pay (CEFIP)

Enlisted aircrew — loadmasters, flight engineers, boom operators, aerial gunners, special mission aviators, airborne cryptologic linguists — receive CEFIP from $150 to $400 per month based on years of operational flying duty. Like ACIP, gate months requirements apply.

Hazardous Duty Incentive Pay (HDIP) for parachute duty, demolition, and toxic fuels is separate from flight pay and runs $150–$250/month for qualifying duty.

Aviation Bonus / Aviator Retention Pay (ARP)

The Air Force pilot shortage is real and persistent. Commercial airline hiring, training pipeline bottlenecks, and operational tempo have driven retention pay to levels unseen in prior decades. The Aviation Bonus is the Air Force's primary tool to keep rated pilots in uniform past their initial Active Duty Service Commitment (ADSC).

The Aviation Bonus (formerly Aviator Continuation Pay, often still called ARP) offers rated pilots multi-year contracts of 3 to 12 years for annual bonus payments. Statutory cap: $50,000/year. Recent FYs set the standard tier near $35,000/year, with the highest tier reserved for fighter pilots and high-shortage airframes.

Airframe / MissionTypical Annual BonusMax Contract Length
Fighter pilots (F-16, F-15E, F-22, F-35)Up to $50,000/yr12 years
Bomber pilots (B-1, B-2, B-52)Up to $35,000/yr12 years
Mobility (C-17, C-130, KC-135, KC-46)$25,000–$35,000/yr12 years
Special operations (AC-130, CV-22)Up to $35,000/yr12 years
RPA pilots (MQ-9, RQ-4)$25,000–$35,000/yr12 years
CSO / Air Battle Manager$15,000–$25,000/yr9–12 years

A fighter pilot accepting a maximum 12-year contract at the top tier could see a total Aviation Bonus value above $600,000, paid as an upfront installment plus annual anniversary payments.

Air Force Enlistment Bonuses and SRB

The Air Force tripled its enlistment bonus budget in FY2026 to compete with private-sector tech and trades hiring. Enlistment Bonus (EB) awards range from $5,000 to $50,000+ for high-demand AFSCs.

AFSC / Career FieldTypeTypical Bonus Range
Cyber Warfare Operations (1B4X1)Enlisted$20K–$50K+
Pararescue / PJ (1T2X1)Special Warfare$20K–$50K
Combat Control / CCT (1Z2X1)Special Warfare$20K–$50K
Tactical Air Control Party / TACP (1Z3X1)Special Warfare$15K–$40K
Special Reconnaissance / SOWT (1Z4X1)Special Warfare$20K–$50K
Cryptologic Language Analyst (1N3X1)Enlisted$15K–$40K
Explosive Ordnance Disposal (3E8X1)Enlisted$15K–$40K
Aerospace Propulsion / AvionicsEnlisted$5K–$20K

Selective Retention Bonus (SRB)

SRB is paid at reenlistment to Airmen in shortage AFSCs. Multipliers and zones are reviewed at least annually based on retention shortfalls. Cyber, special warfare, linguist, EOD, and select aircraft maintenance AFSCs typically dominate the SRB list. Verify current multipliers through the most recent AFI 36-2606 SRB message before making a reenlistment decision.

Special Duty Assignment Pay and Combat Pay

Special Duty Assignment Pay (SDAP) compensates Airmen serving in demanding non-flying duties: Military Training Instructors (MTI) at Lackland BMT, Military Training Leaders (MTL) at tech schools, recruiters, Pararescue/CCT/TACP/SOWT operators, and select First Sergeant or Career Assistance Advisor roles. Rates run roughly $75–$450/month depending on duty and SDAP level (SD-1 through SD-6).

Combat Pay — IDP and CZTE

Airmen deployed to a designated combat zone or imminent danger area receive Imminent Danger Pay of $225 per month. The Combat Zone Tax Exclusion (CZTE) makes most pay tax-free for enlisted and warrant officers, and excludes officer pay up to the senior enlisted cap. Hostile Fire Pay covers single-event hostile exposure.

Hazardous Duty Incentive Pay (HDIP) covers parachute duty, demolition, flight deck duty, toxic fuel handling, and similar high-risk assignments at $150–$250/month.

Air Force BAH and BAS 2026

Airmen receive the same DoD BAH and BAS as all other branches. BAH varies by duty station zip code, grade, and dependency status. Key Air Force installation BAH markets:

  • JBSA / Lackland AFB, San Antonio, TX: Mid-range BAH; BMT, language school, security forces school.
  • Nellis AFB, NV (Las Vegas): Mid-to-high BAH; weapons school and Red Flag.
  • Travis AFB, CA: High BAH (Bay Area-adjacent); strategic airlift.
  • Hurlburt Field / Eglin AFB, FL: Mid BAH; AFSOC and test mission.
  • JBPHH, HI: Very high BAH plus COLA.
  • OCONUS (Ramstein, Lakenheath, Aviano, Misawa, Yokota, Osan, Kunsan): OHA in lieu of BAH, plus COLA where applicable.
  • Other major bases: Wright-Patterson, Edwards, Keesler, Sheppard, Tyndall, MacDill, Beale, Minot, F.E. Warren, Malmstrom.

BAS 2026: Enlisted $476.99/month, Officer $329.02/month. Tax-free. Does not vary by location.

Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard

AFRC and ANG together make up roughly one-third of the total Air Force. Drilling Reservists and Guardsmen earn Inactive Duty Training (IDT / drill) pay — four drill periods per weekend at the daily rate of an active Airman of equal grade and time-in-service. Annual training and mobilizations pay at active-duty rates including BAH, BAS, and special pays. Dual-status technicians draw both civilian salary and military drill pay. Mobilized members are eligible for combat pay, family separation allowance, and incentive pays during the period of orders.

Air Force Retirement

Air Force retirement uses the same DoD systems as every branch. Legacy High-3 (entered before January 1, 2018) pays a 20-year pension at 2.5% per year times the high-36 average. The Blended Retirement System (BRS) for those entering on or after that date pays 2.0% per year plus up to 5% TSP government matching, with optional continuation pay at the 12-year mark. Aviation Bonus and SRB contracts have separate vesting and recoupment terms. TRICARE, commissary, exchange, and VA benefits apply on DoD-wide rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Air Force pay differ from Army or Navy base pay?

No. Base pay is identical across all branches under DoD pay tables. Differences appear in special pays and bonuses — the Air Force pays ACIP, CEFIP, and Aviation Bonus that Army and Navy don't, while those branches pay sea pay, jump pay, and SOF-specific bonuses the Air Force doesn't.

How much is Air Force flight pay 2026?

ACIP for rated officers: $125–$840/month based on years of aviation service. CEFIP for enlisted aircrew: $150–$400/month based on years of operational flying. Both require gate months to maintain eligibility.

What is the Air Force pilot retention bonus?

The Aviation Bonus (ARP) pays up to $50,000 per year for 3 to 12-year commitments. Recent FYs have set the standard tier near $35,000/year with the higher tier reserved for fighter pilots and high-shortage airframes. A 12-year top-tier contract can exceed $600,000 total.

What is the Air Force enlistment bonus 2026?

FY2026 tripled the enlistment bonus budget. Bonuses run $5K–$50K+ for high-demand AFSCs: cyber (1B4X1), special warfare (PJ/CCT/TACP/SOWT), cryptologic linguist (1N3X1), EOD (3E8X1), and select maintenance AFSCs. Verify current contracted amounts with your recruiter before signing.

Does the Air Force get combat pay?

Yes. Imminent Danger Pay $225/month plus Combat Zone Tax Exclusion in designated combat zones. Hostile Fire Pay covers single-event exposure outside designated zones.

What is the difference between Air Force and Space Force pay?

Base pay is identical — both use DoD tables. The Space Force was carved out of the Air Force in December 2019 and uses Air Force pay infrastructure. Differences are in specialty bonuses: Space Force has aggressive SRBs targeting cyber and space operations, while the Air Force pays Aviation Bonus, ACIP, and CEFIP that don't apply to Guardians. See our Space Force pay guide.
